Uttar Pradesh’s DGP Prashant Kumar emphasized on Tuesday that the police department is diligently monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and security of everyone during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela.

“Today, as Sadhus from several Akharas take their holy dip, it’s being called the Amrit Snan. The 8th Akhara is currently taking part in the ritual. Our officers and jawans are on duty to maintain control, ensuring everything remains peaceful,” Kumar said. He added that by 12 PM, approximately 1.6 crore devotees had already taken a dip in the sacred waters of the Sangam.

He further explained that the authorities are utilizing advanced technologies to manage the crowd effectively. “We are using thermal imaging to help with crowd control, particularly during the night. Additionally, police response vehicles and ambulances are stationed at the site to handle any emergency situations,” Kumar mentioned.

In line with modern security measures, DGP Kumar also revealed that AI tools and other advanced technologies are being employed for tasks like crowd management, traffic monitoring, underwater surveillance, and the use of state-of-the-art firefighting equipment. “Both PM Modi and CM Yogi have instructed us to use all the available modern tools to ensure the event runs smoothly and securely,” he added.

The police have set up a robust system to help reunite lost devotees with their families. “We have 10 Lost and Found centers, and yesterday we successfully reunited lost individuals with their families. Whenever someone is reported missing, we take their screenshot and match it against our database. Once a person is found, we notify the nearest police station to facilitate a swift reunion,” Kumar explained.

In an effort to improve safety, underwater drones have been deployed for surveillance and rescue operations. This is the first time such technology is being used for the Kumbh, making it a significant addition to security measures, as stated by Uttar Pradesh Police.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, a sacred event that happens every 12 years at four locations across India, is currently being held from January 13 to February 26, 2025. The event is expected to draw around 450 million devotees, pilgrims, and tourists from around the world.

The key bathing dates, or ‘snaan’ dates, for the event include January 14 (Makar Sankranti – First Shahi Snan), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya – Second Shahi Snan), February 3 (Basant Panchami – Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).

The Maha Kumbh is not only a spiritual gathering but also a unique opportunity to showcase India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage on a global stage.
